Delivering the Local Community Newspaper

Monday is the second day of the week or, for many of us, the first day of the work week.  I will try to post every Monday a work related story or something informational (fitting for the first day of the work week).

Once upon a time, I delivered the local community newspaper.  Each week, I would receive Newspaper for assembling and delivering.  My duty was to ensure that each Newspaper: (a) contains all of its contents; (b) is delivered to each household on time; and (c) is packaged professionally to prevent any potential damages.

The amount of money I received was based on the number of pages delivered.  As such, the Thursday Newspaper always resulted in more money because of Flyer Thursdays!  The local newspaper company had rewards and recognition programs where couriers are celebrated and rewarded for delivering and completing more routes.  All in all it was a good experience; however, I must admit, the amount of money I made was modest.

While performing my duties as a Newspaper courier, I learned some things about my neighbourhood, such as:
  1.  Do not stand on somebody's front yard under any circumstances (even if it is covered completely in snow) - I must say I cheated on this but I never stepped on the lawn of someone who complained or gave me the "look";
  2. Some residents really love reading the local Newspaper because it keeps them inform and up-to-date with respect to their beloved community;
  3. You can call the local Newspaper to request that delivery be stopped for your specified period;
  4.  Little things about my neighbours (ie. snow blower users, garden enthusiast, etc); and
  5. (subconsciously) The number of steps it takes to complete the delivery route.
I think Newspaper delivery is a good first job and experience for any child.

Nowadays, I just call my local Newspaper from time to time to complain about not receiving my Newspaper on time or at all :D (which is an extremely rare occasion)!  I enjoy reading my local Newspaper and look forward to every Flyer Thursday!
