I heard the above quote a few times (probably in theatres or during viewing of movies). Hopefully the punctuation mark was added correctly in such a short dialogue.
I have never done any research about why it was used or how it came to be.
My guess is this...
There were extra copies available for reading because someone printed too many copies.
Expanding on my guess...
It is a waste to have extras but no readers
