My advice after a just a little over a handful of Spartan Race
1. Tie your shoes properly, make sure your time chip is securely tied to your shoes.
2. Don't wear socks, seriously.
3. Tie an unopened water bottle to your neck with a bandanna. You can get a box of 24 for $1.88 CDN (on sale). Drink the cup of water at the water points. Only open the water bottle when necessary. (I had half a bottle of water left at the end of Spartan Beast last year).
4. Walk as lightly as possible on mud.
5. Make sure you don't lose your shoe with the time chip. My shoe with time chip got stuck in mud last year and I had to pull it out.
Last but not least, don't run up the hill at the beginning especially when you can see that it is very steep. Last year, a group sprinted off and I caught up to them (halfway up the hill) just walking soothingly. I don't know what happened after I passed them.
Everyone will be excited at the starting line. There WILL always be at least one guy going "WOOO, YEAH" while jumping around like he is at a daytime rave or something. Don't let that guy fool you, especially if he is your teammate, he may actually be the weakest link. For all you know, he could be the mascot of the group!
Good luck!
