When I was a child, I rode my bicycle at least once a week. It's leisurely. Once my friend and I saw our classmate during our leisurely bike ride, being distracted, my friend rode into some bushes and my classmate got horned by a car. There were four of us. My friend and I rode on the pedestrian path while our classmate rode on the road. There wasn't designated bike lanes in our areas back then. It was really funny.
Leisure bike rides simply mean you are riding to relax. There's no time limit or a certain speed you must travel at. You just ride comfortably and at your own pace. You could chat too.
I don't know when I stopped riding my bicycle but I did. When I started riding again, I wanted to ride with a purpose. Anyhow, I think I have better road sense and stamina but my biking skills are still crap.
Currently, I ride alone but I like to think that I'm sorta tagging along with the cars, trucks and whatnots that are passing me all the time. As I ride alone, I'm almost always alert unless I'm totally out of stamina (which is now very rare). I'm alert because I don't want to injure someone. My classmate got hit by a bicycle during her walk to elementary school and experienced back pain since than.
I want to ride with speed that's why I prefer riding on the road. I might be a nuisance to drivers on the road but imagine riding on a bicycle route for the first time and seeing two toddlers walking around at the bottom of a hill of the bicycle path in a park area. I have experienced that and immediately left that bicycle route and went back to the road. It's really hard to have an enjoyable bike ride when you constantly have to watch out for others. I'm sorry if you see me at the pedestrian paths sometimes, I probably need a breather or am lost or something or maybe the road is too narrow for me.
I used to hate and am fearful of riding on the roads but I'm starting to enjoy it now. (It's actually nicer to ride on the pedestrian path, there's less friction, the surface is smoother).
One piece of advice, don't ride on the road if you are just learning how to bike ride.
